Sci tech 34% female

On another post Mark Rauterkus wrote,

"Noticed this today. Perhaps it is worthy of a posting on the main page:

Sci Tech is now with 34% girls as per the PPS web site.

Does that make sense?"

It was never really clear why weights were put into place to increase representation of economically disadvantaged students (who are also more likely to be African American) but not females; all of these groups are underrepresented in STEM fields.

Something also could be done about the dress code- some have noted that girls are not very enthusiastic about dressing as described by the code. Did anyone consult with female students before deciding on the dress code?

The weights were put in place so the school would demographically represent the districts demographic. I wonder if less girls apply or change schools after a while?

My son had 4/5 out of 5 points/weights (no free reduced lunch) he ended up being about last on the waiting list. The system the school requires is basically a roulette wheel. I wish they would put more emphasis on kids that really do excel in those areas, that is not the way PPS rolls, unless it is CAPA.

Unless the district is only 34% female, the school does not represent the district's demographic.

Maybe the girls are planning on enrolling at Westinghouse's all female academy. :)

The single gender schools do seem to be helping to solve the problem of underenrollment at U Prep, as students looking for an alternative to single gender settle for U Prep despite the inconvenient location.

How can kids plan a year before a new school Is announced or approved?

Weak effort if you are PR, good job if your comment is snarky.

Ask the Roosevelt, the board and the rule makers. Why ask here?

Wait, I apologize for that comment, I forgot, we can't question them.

Aren't single gender academies set to open next Fall (2011)? By the preceding October many students are definitely thinking of where they will be the next year- for example, a magnet fair was held a week ago for Fall 2011 enrollment. Current Westinghouse students are most likely very aware that their school will be very different next year, and incoming 8th graders are (hopefully!) receiving counseling on what their options are.

Westinghouse single gender was not an option to the 34 % population that are being referred to in this post.

Female students living in Homewood or neighborhoods on East of Negley would have the choice of applying to the sci tech magnet, or just going to their feeder school (Westinghouse single gender), or for a mixed gender option at U Prep.

Questioner,

Only applies to 2011-2012 and beyond.
