The twelve month employee has 5 weeks vacation and the tenth month employee has none!? Then the ten month employee has all summer off with out pay and can not get unemployment. Do you have any clue how demanding, draining, depressing and over whelming it is working in these schools? You get depressed, over whelmed and some of us have mental break downs! The ten month employees deserve some type of vacation time to mentally deal with this job! PLEASE HELP!"

Are most teachers 10 month employees or 12 month employees? Don't a lot of employees work 10 months but get their pay over 12 months?

Anonymous said...

No, teachers are 10 months, but do not get paid over the summer UNLESS they take on another job inside or outside the school district. If they take another job, there is no vacation. If they don't work in the summer there is no pay.

Old Timer here-- the decision was made to NOT spread the 10 month money over 12 months during the old real trade union days- Why? To shut up all the people who say we are paid for 2 months of NO work. The ability to get the $$ taken out via credit union didn't come until the 80s. Also we are really only paid for "days we work"--twenty work days a month-- not "paid holidays"

This is the dumbest thing anyone has ever written. You can budget the money or have a bank do the same thing for you. You get the same salary. The 12 month employees do not get the breaks within the school year that the 10 month employees do (week for spring break, week for Christmas, the so-called, random "vacation days" in the fall). Of course you cannot get unemployment-you are not unemployed! So 12 month employees shouldn't get vacation days??! What will people complain about next.

Ahh-the old days. To tweak anon 8:02. We were paid on a 20 day school month. We did get paid early in December just before Christmas. That was nice. We then went three weeks because we had a week off for spring break. The Credit Unions summer pay program was nice for some. If you were not disciplined enough, or too lazy to do it yourself, this was a nice option.
Annon 7:41 asks what will people complain about... How about an empty parking lot on a two hour delay day. The public wants to know if we are getting paid for that time or will we make it up. Quite often, we got to work on time as required on a delay day, only to have school cancelled. We are not compensated for showing up only to be sent home. Try to stay in the building when they call the day. The lights are turned off and the heat is lowered enough to please a penguin. Principals say you have to leave for safety reasons. Forget using the time to get work done, without pay.

The delay issue must be addressed. All should have 2 hour delays. Teachers, admin and most staff should NOT be expected to show at the regular time.

I am with 6:13, the delay issue needs to be addressed. I have never worked in a school but do know several teachers in my neighborhood who don't mind getting to school on delay days to get work done ahead of the kids' arrival. On those days that ended up being snow days they stayed as long as they were allowed. The bigger issue is the lost instruction time for the kids, especially those who struggle. Several stories were done this year about schools who make snow days "cyber days" for the students. While it is not feasible for some of our students who lack the at home computer, can't somebody get creative with options? In some cases the days off are predicted, do any teachers give homework based on the expectation of a snow day?

The time students miss do not seem to be an issue. The federal and state reimbursement is justified if lunch has been served. A school can run on a modified time schedule to squeeze in as many classes as they want. Classes can be rotated so the same three morning classes are not the ones missed.
The real issue is the teacher time lost. Taxpayers only see us when we appear to be getting away with something. I don't argue that at all. The bigger focus should be that student time should be made up. Every three days delayed is a day of school missed. (Not including homeroom and lunch)

Since everyone wants to count minutes, what about the countless hours spent on school work after the official work day has ended? This is without any compensation. What about teacher personal time lost?

10 month employees get paid for ten month and make $20,000 to $30,000 - the teachers make $86,000 in ten months. 10 month employees do not get paid for two months so the 12 month employees make $7500 more! Say a 12 month employee is with the district for 15 years then they have 5 weeks vacation to deal with the stress and abuse! The 10 month employees get zero vacation days that have 15 years wot the district! We are talking vacation days during the year to deal with the stress. The 12 month employees take off always during the school season because of the stress! 10 month employees put is at least an extra 2 - 3 hours a day!

A 12 month employees are usually the big swigs making $$$$! While the others are dealing with children that are out of control and many staff members are in counseling and have had nervous break downs. The vacation days would help with the stress. Unless you work in these schools you have no clue about what we deal with on a daily basis! If the employees are unhealthy so is the education! You can not teach stressed and abused. The administrators can be emotionally abusive, Its just STRESS making us all ill!

Yeah, the secretaries and custodians are pulling in big bucks working 12 months. Give me a break. If you don't like the salary, why did you take the job?

Anonymous said...

The custodians and Secretaries get vacation days because they are 12 month employees as a matter of fact with 15 years 12 month employees have 5 weeks paid vacation and 10 month employees with the same service get none and if they did the schools would run better because of the stress. Salary was brought up because 10 month employees that are not teachers do not make enough to live off of with being unemployed in the summer. Ten month employees can not get unemployment. And for the person saying if you do not like the salary quit (that is not how educated people handle issues). Do we want the schools to turn around? Well take care of your employees please. The last I checked on the website some custodians made $90,000 a year and get vacation days with that $90,000! Everyone knows that the secretaries are under paid but I am sure those vacation days are nice.

Aren't the 10 month employees off for spring break? Seems like a week vacation right there...

Anonymous said...

No one suggested anyone should quit-a poster asked why one would accept a job if one was not satisfied with the salary and vacation benefits.

Who is complaining? As it is a top step teacher makes almost as much per month as a principal. Prinicipal's also have to use part of their "5" weeks of vacation for the Christmas week off and the Spring Break week off so now they are down to "3" weeks of vacation in the summer. Principal's work a lot of extra hours too, not including the meetings that are scheduled outside of the school day. If you think that they have it so great then go get your Principal's certification and join the fun. Quit whining.....

this thread and the spitting match of who works harder or puts in more hours or gets better vacation is a sign of extraordinary low morale.

I guess the 10 month employees will just keep being over worked and deliver a bad education. A 12 month employee get paid during the summer and weeks vacation. The 10 month employees have unpaid summers. Vacation days should be for when you need to take them for mental health days! What it comes down to is that these kids are not manageable and through out the year you need to take days off. Take the holiday back and just give 10 month employees vacation days. We work hard in these schools. All these comments help nothing! The staff are miserable and it shows in kids scores! You say get another job - well this is what we went to college for and paid tons of money for. This will not go any where any ways!

extraordinary low morale, what a joke! No., it's called a messed up society!

I have never heard so much whining before. Try working the in the private sector and making what you make with the equivalent stress level. Many of you couldn't hack it. No one said it was easy but you also get paid very well for it. You can't have no stress and high pay both....

Anonymous said...

Paid very well? ha ha ha, you call $22,000 paid well for verbal and physical abuse at work? You have no idea what the employees go through! That is what a paraprofessional makes which is $800 every two weeks after taxes, Ya we are just banking it. Really?

I used to be a Para. I know how much they make. Of course I always wished that I made more money but at the same time I never really felt underpaid. I only worked 7 hours a day for 10 months of the year and made almost $30000.00. Try making that much working at McDonalds or Walmart full time. I also had great benefits. Yes, there were some days where I questioned my sanity for being there but most of the time I appreciated the hours and time off in the summer. Prior to doing this I had worked as a retail manager and didn't make a whole lot more than I made as a Para but worked MANY more hours, had MUCH more stress and worked 12 months of the year with only 2 weeks of vacation. Appreciate what you have. There are places in the USA where teachers don't make much more than you make here as a Para. Also, as everyone always say regarding every job. We all choose what we do for a living so if you aren't happy go somewhere else. You may ask why I don't do this anymore. I didn't leave for another job, I left to raise my family so it wasn't out of unhappiness with my job. In fact, there are days that I miss it.
