PURE Reform has created this blog as a forum for parents, teachers and community members to share information and voice concerns regrading the reform process in the Pittsburgh Public Schools. Although we would like to foster constructive dialogue, PURE Reform does not edit content. The views expressed by bloggers in this forum are not necessarily views held by PURE Reform.

i noticed the article never mentioned Restorative Practices, the new method/buzzwords employed by pps this year. frankly, i was surprised when the board so embraced the student bill of rights some months ago. it was the kind of thing you might see in a feel good movie and although the teen bloc kids worked really hard the ideas can not be applied to the full enrollment.
As far as parents go, I bet the split in favor would be about 7 to 3. the perception has always been that discipline is lacking in pps.
Engagement, relevance, respect, rigor, relationships are wath is lacking in PPS. In other words the Students'Bill of Rights are lacking. Discipline or punitive measures to get people (young or old) to do what you want them to do will NEVER get the 'educated' result!
So keep on keepin' on advocating for more disciplinary measures!
A good question for analysis would be WHY did PPS accept the Student Bill of Rights?
Right! PR, PR, PR, none of with substance, reality, commitment. PPS is all about PR. AND it was proclaimed loudly, repeatedly and to the exclusion of all else at the CITY meeting with Curtiss Porter and Linda Lane, and Teresa Kail Smith, and other PPS Central Office and CITY COUNCIL members.
Create GREAT SCHOOLS and that means ALL of PPS and you won't need PR or charters or sale of schools for pennies, or Gates, or Broad or ALTERNATIVE schools, and on and on.
If PPS doesn't know how to do this, the at least consider allowing those that do know to take it on. What does PPS have to lose? What, exactly? Spell it out!
Again , Wilkinsburg Schools are problem solving not only with disciplinary measures but finding remedies that engage these students with relevance, respect, rigor and relationships. The photo speaks in todays PG.
Maybe we should let Wilkinsburg administration run PPS might have a better vision in dealing with discipline among other things .And PPS administration can be their INTERNS learnig about how to run a school dist. The right way always speak about PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT I believe the Gates foundation pay for it and support it.

How do Wilkinsburg parents and students feel about these measures, and would Pittsburgh parents and students be in favor of a similar approach?

PPS accepted it be because it came from A+ schools and it was great PR.
