Can anyone tell me why the School Police received SEVERAL raises and the Security Officers that work in the schools have not received a raise in 22 years other than one percent a year? "

Hello, August 12, 2015 at 6:05 PM

So, what is your point? Do you deal with kids that are schizophrenic, mental retardation, odd, adhd, behavior disorders, autistic, drug addicts, drug dealers, ungrateful principals, ungrateful teachers, out of control parents, police making you feel beneath them, and much more. The Security Officers are stressed and on medication. They are not appreciated and they are hit, spit on, sworn at by parents and students. Security have not had a raise in like 21 years. Security are these kids parents at school, safe zone, therapist, and they trust them and go to them for help. Security earn every single penny earned and yes, are way under paid! Security have to pay for their own insurance incase they get hurt and the taxes taken is outrageous! You took Security out of the builds and put an Officer in the building that does not do Security work nor comes to the Securities aid during fights. They say they are told to not do Security work which is protecting the staff and children!!! The Police ride around and come and get the kids that are in trouble after the Security Officers have been hit, spit on or have fallen down the steps. The Police make $15,000 more than Security!!! The Pittsburgh Public School Security are the best in PA!!! The few that are not need to be fired!!!

Hello August 12, 2015 at 5:43 PM,

Thank you for caring and telling it 100% how it is!

The Chief of Police makes $95,000 a year. What does he do? $95,000 to be a Chief of Police at the Pittsburgh Public Schools is ridiculous!!!

I am thankful just to have a job and off for 2 months in the summer thank you Pittsburgh public schools safety Department for giving me the best job and good pay plus the benefits people would love to have my job no complaints here.

Yes, Security is off for two months without pay after getting hit and spit on and then the police come when everything is under control. Did you ever think that the district should be thankful that these security guards will put their lives in danger daily? Who keeps weapons out of the schools, drugs out of the schools and the kids and staff safe? The security guards that have not had a raise in 22 years. They should diffidently make more than the police. Can you please have compassion to our feelings and quit acting as security are no bodies. Just like when the police come into the schools and act like they are in control. No the security are in control of the schools. The police officers in the schools now cry like babies over spilled milk! Just please give the respect that security deserve. We will be contacting the school board members pertaining to the lack of respect the security receive and a low pay compared to school police. Security are thankful for their jobs but see they deserve much more. Fadzen always fought for security and told them that they were the first responders and without them their would not be a department.

I'm a 20+ year PPS teacher and I agree with 8:38.

Like all other PPS teachers, I've had serious security incidents in my classrooms. Never once in all my years of service has a school police officer come to my aid. Never once.

That doesn't mean that the school police are lazy, or bad, or anything like that. It's just that they are never around when you need them. Maybe that's due to how they are assigned by the higher ups. Or maybe there's just not enough of them. Who knows? At any rate, in my experience all the school police do is fill out reports after the incident is over.

Three cheers for the security guards! They are the ones who show up at my classroom door when I need help.

I work in a school where the security sit in the camera room and only come out when called for so I think they are paid well enough .I actually have witnessed a security guard turning away from a fight and went the other way while teachers were breaking up the fight and I think it was the security guard on here the one complaining about more money.some do and most do not deserve more money I think the ones that are in the bigger high schools where they are out number by 500 to 1 security guard now they deserve more not the ones who complain and don't do there jobs.Thats my opion

I was thinking the same thing. I'm also a teacher and I appreciate all of the work the security officers do! I have seen security officers injured on the job trying to keeps students and teachers safe. The security officers are on the frontlines and deserve a raise and respect for what they do. They know our students and act as therapist, social worker, and friend to many students who are troubled. Their relationships with the students help to de-escalate many situations that would turn violent. Thank you to all of the security officers for everything you do! Honestly I don't even think we need school police. Like 8:38 stated, the security officers have handled the situation and secured safety by the time the police come to write a report and/or transport a student. I say give the school police pay to the security officers and call Pittsburgh City Police if an arrest, report, or transportation is required. The school police have a tendency of "forgetting" key details or "losing" evidence when teachers and security are injured by students, so city police would be better suited anyway.

Thank you security!!! And special thanks to our wonderful security officer at Miller!!

Let me say first that I have always had much respect for our security guards. In my experience, when things were going down the tubes, they were there to help, defuse, take control, and restore order. They have earned every thin dime. In most cases, without a word of thanks or appreciation from the teacher, administrator, or parent. Many times, a parent would complain about the way "he put his hands on my child"
Next, let me say this. I have seen so many good security guards who have settled into the job so well that they never showed the interest in furthering their own career. They could have gone into police academy training to become a school officer. It is either too difficult to do or the demands of a school police officer are much greater than most recognize on this post. It sounds too easy that they make all that money while the security does all the dirty work.
What troubles me is my last point here. The original poster says school police have had two raises while security have had no raises in twenty-two years. Except for the one percent each year. To me, that is a twenty-two raises. What was the salary then compared to now. Remember, base salary plus one percent becomes the new base salary. Look at the tables and see how it grows each year. There were years as a teacher where my raise was 1.5%. This after having a one to two year wage freeze. (Yes, I am aware my base pay was thousands more the security guards. You were the one that raised the percent issue.) I have known many guards who raised a family on this pay. Even as single parents with several kids. Single people who bought up real estate. Some who sent kids on to college. Most of these people never complained about not having enough.

The reason most security don't want to further there education and become a police officer is because they make more money then the police ,with over time so why would they want to become a police officer and make less money .I think most security officers are lazy and I bet they are the ones who want more money.

I'm August 14 at 9:59 AM. And I must say you're wrong in your post. Do you work in the PPS, in a position where you can really observe - and occasionally need - security? And the "need" part is really important. Because you cannot really judge a security guard until you need him or her.

I have more than 20 years in as a PPS teacher. And the security guards have never once let me down, never once. Are some security guards lazy? I suppose so. Just like some bus drivers are lazy and some painters are lazy. But lazy security guards are few and far between, in my experience.

New Post please

Has anyone looked over the latest Board Docs? Someone posted elsewhere that so many Homewood Montessori people are transferring. I only found two. What I did find more interesting is the Board is having some type of teacher recognition event at the Warhol in November.
They have approved the spending of 35,350.00 for a one day event. This money is for facility (venue) rental, tents, tables, chairs, delivery and set up costs and parking. Look in the finance for 11.06, 11.07, 11.08 and 11.09.
Another blog topic was security salary. How much security can 35,000 buy?

When the August Wilson Center is looking to fill it's event calendar.....PPS looks to the Warhol?

Maybe the Foundations should plan a 'meet and greet' between Linda Lane and Michael Polite and Richard Taylor.http://www.post-gazette.com/ae/theater-dance/2015/08/27/Pittsburgh-August-Wilson-Center-announces-new-funding-programming/stories/201508270145
