Teachers' union/ "Win a trip for two"

Anonymous wrote:

"New comment: "Win a trip for two". That's what Nina Esposito sent out to all of her members. You read that correctly. Win a Spring Break trip for two and get a $2,000 voucher to take to any travel agency. ARE YOU KIDDING ME! Can Esposito be this incompetent and this brazing to think that one teacher winning a trip for two will make hundreds of teachers who are being cheated out of their step increases, who are forced to do more work than any other group of teachers on the planet, and who are being hit with verbal assaults, punches, and now bricks, forget about the embarrassing, inhuman, macabre, introverted persona that a Pittsburgh Public School teacher must take on daily? Esposito, do us a favor, jam the raffle box with slips of paper that just have your name on it and take Harold Grant and Bill Heilmann with you. "

- What exactly do teachers need to do to be eligible for the raffle?

So now Gates and company decides that they arent putting their ed bucks into teacher evaluation-- well duh! How about correcting the disaster you made in schools and start to push for safe environments with plenty of opportunities (which by the way his "small high schools" did NOT do) How about looking at.... what works? "

Payroll practices

"New Post: The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is in collusion with the Pittsburgh Public Schools. The Post-Gazette has disabled comments on the Watkins' assault because the owners and editors of the paper know that these comments will bring negativity on the so-called district, who are in partnership. Therefore, the newspspaer is infringing upon the very thing that is supposed to move newspapers: The First Amendment. The newspaper has also been informed of the district's stealing money from its employees via the egregious PNC paycard with its illegal fees and stealing pay days worked by teachers. The latter was never disclosed by the district and union to its staff and its members, respectively, because many people left the district had hundreds of thousands of dollars stolen from them by the district in unison with the union. The union leaders should be in jail for not disclosing this to its members. The theft is due to teachers not being paid for their first two weeks of school until the last pay of the year in June. Consequently, any teacher who quit, resigned, or was terminated before the last pay did not get the salary earned for the first two weeks worked. There is a list and a group of people filing grievances against the district right now, and there are a number of maternity leave women suing the district for being cheated out of days worked, but Esposito never let the members know. In summary, if you have or had a PNC paycard, left this district before the end of the year, or are or were on maternity leave, you are a victim of salary theft by the district in unison with the PFT 400. Post on here to get a file action suit against both entities, but more importantly to see Esposito and PPS district superintendents past and present in jail, but most importantly to get teachers who worked for this district the money earned. "

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Another teacher has reportedly been attacked at the same Pittsburgh Public School on the North Side where an assault incident stemmed from last week.

Sources tell KDKA that a male student in the fourth grade attacked a female teacher in a classroom this afternoon.

It happened at Pittsburgh King Pre-K-8 School on the city’s North Side.

so glad people are letting the tales out.... "

Age bias

A common complaint in the Roosevelt years, and perhaps to a lesser extent the Lane years, was a perception of bias against older teachers, principals and administrators. Cost was felt to be an issue (more experienced teachers earned more), but beyond that a common impression was that younger teachers were less likely to ask questions.  Has the situation improved under Hamlet?  Or are there enough older teachers, staff and administrators remaining to make a determination?

A book from last year, "Disrupted:  My misadventure in the start-up bubble," about a 50+ individual who goes to work at a Boston tech company where most employees are under 30, is entertaining and echoes some of the experiences mentioned by experienced teachers.  In addition, some of the techniques used by administrators are eerily Rooseveltian.

Discipline for failure to wear uniforms

Anonymous wrote:

"I taught for 8 years at a middle school with students who wore uniforms. On the surface students being suspended for not wearing a uniform sounds outrageous. However, I can tell you first hand there is more to it than just not having a uniform. First, many of these schools are magnet schools in which a parent applied to get their child in knowing it is a uniform school. The student and parent sign a contract agreeing to the uniform policy. When students do not have a shirt or pants, had an accident and so on uniforms were given to them through the school donation centers. These suspensions, at least the ones I witnessed were all students who repeatedly and defiantly choose not to follow the rules repeatedly. We had students wear red belts to show their gang affiliation and create gang groups in schools. Many of the students who were warned several time about their persistent defiance regarding uniforms, after phone calls homes, restorative conversations and other interventions were finally suspended. I guarantee if you look at the WHOLE situation for these children you will see the WHOLE picture because you decide to judge. I welcome you to come into a school and see the lack of authority teachers and administrators actually do have and then see with your own eyes the result of how our students are running wild in these buildings, fighting, not completing work, assaulting teachers, running out of the classrooms because there is NO let me repeat NO accountability for students. But please continue to make judgement based on surface information"
