ARE YOUR CHILDREN BEING PROTECTED BY POLICE OFFICERS THAT ARE NOT EVEN CERTIFIED? YOU SHOULD DEMAND THAT THE PITTSBURGH PUBLIC SCHOOLS SHOULD RUN A BACK GROUNG CHECK ON EVERY SINGLE POLICE OFFICER. THERE ARE SOME WORKING WITH YOUR CHILDREN THAT ARE NOT EVEN CERTIFIED"

Can you provide more information on what certification is required- certified by who? Is this certification beyond what a normal police officer receives to become an officer? Can you cite to or provide the language from the relevant law or regulation?

Lack of appropriate certification and credentials has been an issue at PPS for at least the last 10 years.

Police Officer Certification and Certificate Program Information
In order to work as a police officer, applicants MUST complete police academy training, which is separate from the optional undergraduate certificate program. After completing police academy training, interested individuals MUST pass an examination for certification as a police officer; certification is administered by each state.

***Ours is Harrisburg and most is the Pittsburgh Public School Police Officers never passed it. There are people working as police officer s that are not even certified. Never researched!

ok, after Lelock, can there be a hole in the system allowing for less than certified officers?

I heard that most of the police officers cheated their way through the IUP police academy. That is pathethic. They should give them all lie detector test. What a joke cheating and can not pass a test, Pittsburghs finest. Now we know the Chief with the high school education has to comment.

No one was interviewed for the Chief of police job! It was all politics. The person is now qualified. There were applicants way more qualified. No one was interviewed. Dr. Lane just handed the job to Brown.

OK, I will call it as I see it. I'm a veteran (20+ years) PPS teacher. And I have great respect for the PPS security guards. When there's a fight in a classroom, they are right there to help. And when there's a fight in the hallways, they are right there to help.

But never once have the PPS school police been right there to help. Never once in my 20+ years PPS teaching experience. Think about that. Never once! They might show up after a fight to take a report, but that's about it.

Make of that what you will. But as for me, I say get rid of the PPS school police, and give raises to the PPS security guards. And make this very clear to all building administrators: If there is violence in your school, don't fool around, and don't hesitate. Call the city police.

PPS will never give control of police matters to city police. They want control of incident reports and press releases. Since the beginning of the PPS police department, the board has maintained that PPS police do not carry guns. I'll admit it is dangerous to bring a gun to a fistfight. But bringing fists to a gunfight makes no sense either.
At one time, school police could be in contact with city from their portable radios. This can still be done. No need to loose time by calling 911.

Encourage your board members to make a change, get rid of school police. Retain the officers as security only. Call the city police when needed.

These school police arent even legal officer. A lot never passed the state testing after the police academy. There are two processes. The PPS can be sued for millions. If the PPS gave the city control they would not habe all these problems. They jhave a guy running the department wth a high school education thhat has zero ledership skills.

We need the pps chief to explain how he became chief from a security officers positions

The chief was a security guard then went to the police academy. Became a policeman. Then george brown, mark williams and gary paull took the commanders test. George brown wad the only one to fail the test and fadzen gave him the job. Then dr. Linda lane gave him the chief job without interviewing anyone else that applied for the position knowing that he had never been a leader and only had a high school education. The chief job i believe you need a bachelors degree unless they changed it for politics with brown.

I sent this blog and the perry syudent blog to all the Pittsburgh news papers, news stations, state police, District Attornets Office, State Rep, city council and Pittsburgh Mayors office via email. This needs to be investigated.

I am sorry here folks, I don't have all the "facts" I do know all police officers are supposed to complete police training. As I understand, PPS police even complete the weapons portion. (not just pepper spray and baton) In the end, PPS do not carry firearms.
Once completed, isn't the entire class of graduates sworn in by a judge? This includes PPS, city police, Pitt police and PAT police?? I find it somewhat difficult to believe that if PPS officers did not earn the badge, the others would let it slide???
I will admit that many officers today are not fit to serve. Physically and mentally. This includes city, Pitt, PAT officers too. Some of them, are a hot mess. But that does not mean they are any less dedicated.

7:10,

September 8 at 3:47 AM here. When it comes to PPS police officers, the key point is not their dedication, or their training. The key point is their value. And I'm telling you that the PPS police officers have no value. They are never around when you need them. Never.

As I mentioned before, I'm a veteran PPS teacher. When I call for help, it's the building security that responds. The PPS police are never the first-responders. They might show up later to take a report, or to transport a student to Juvi Hall. But they do me no good when there is a fight in my classroom RIGHT NOW.

Get rid of the PPS police. If a police presence is really needed, call the city police. Give raises to the PPS building security guards.

4:35 PM, In my 7:10 PM post, I never said they were always there when you need them. Security has always been there first. This is always the case. Even in the days when we had a school police stationed in the building, (remember the RSS) It was almost always the security who was there first. In everyday life, the police are never there until they are called. Is there response any faster? I don't think so. How long does it take them to arrive at your home when you need them. I know Chief McClay rescinded his recent order that calls like simple assault and such are taken over the phone. Not by a responding unit.
I agree you can get rid of the PPS police force. The current Chief, Commanders and Indians! But how will the system improve? We are kidding ourselves when we think that city police will arrive any sooner. City police will never be stationed in our buildings, ever. It will take the same amount of response time, if not longer. The security will still be there first.
At least under the present system, school police do come when called. City police will not be called as often. City police will not just drop in. They used to do that often at Brashear and Carrick. Drive by Carrick sometime. You will often see a PPS police car outside.
Please don't think city police will do a better job. They won't, they can't.

Hello Sept. 15 9:47 PM,

Sept. 14 at 4:35 PM here. I agree with you. Response time for the city police would be no better than that of the PPS police. My suggestion to eliminate the PPS police is more of a resource thing. Take all the money spent on the PPS police and give the building security guards a raise. And hire more building security guards!

The PPS police are actually redundant. They simply duplicate what the city police do. It's like the PPS having its own fire department.

Unfortunately, Sept. 8 at 9:54 AM is also correct. The PPS will probably never get rid of its police force. As it is now, central administration can control, and bury, incident reports. They'd lose that power (corruption) if the city police wrote those reports.

Only few of the pps police officers are certified to even be officers. The pps could face many law suits. The security are the first responders. The chief is highly disliked by his staff and was never qualified. The chief and Piasecki were put in their positions by politics. Not one other person was interviewed. The pps only have one security officer per middle school which is just nuts! The last few police officers cheated their wat through the iup police academy handing down the answers to all the academy test. When are the police going to come in and get these schools under control? They are the police!what are they waiting for?

Anonymous said...

Those that are reading this. This is being looked into at this time.

Is the new superintendent investigating to see if these police officers are certified and not working illegally? Why don't they just hire the city police? They call them when things lose control now because the school police department cant handle situations.

Anonymous said...

They need a security department and head of security. They need two security per floor of high school and middle schools. No security should be in Elementary schools because security are not therapist, social workers, or behaviour specialist for elementary children and need to quit doing those jobs without the pay.

I would hope that any PPS employee, regardless the title, would bring to any situation that presents itself the best of their humanity with or without pay.
