Thank god.

Also good that they didn't let him stretch out his stay at PPS to the 5 year mark where PPS would have to pay a pension.

I agree - thank god!

Does anyone think this might end up with Dr. Lopez designing a charter?

Has anything he has already designed worked out?

Westinghouse students deserve a good educational program. They will thrive under the right leadership, mature, caring, knowledgeable, committed, invested in the community, and an EDUCATOR with experience and expertise.

Mr. Lopez is not an educator with qualities necessary for success in this "village."

Again, Westinghouse students will thrive under the right leadership and educational scenario.

He's gone from PPS? Was this his choice or was he pushed out the door?

Could be that people think this is the next stone to step to in order to establish himself as an authority on a national stage. 60 minutes could be here this time next year touting HCV. Good luck to him.

When Derrick Lopez met with Homewood folks about Westinghouse last fall things did not go well. People felt they had not been kept informed or had a real say in plans for the school. He'll need to take a different approach with the childrens zone.

I am old school and like to read a newspaper that is printed on paper. Somehow I only saw the online version of this story. Perhaps there will be more when it is official, if it is not already. I would like to hear how Dr. Lopez will be putting his mark on the project.

The PPS web site has an article about it.

This is like "Ten Little Indians." First Berdnik, then Roosevelt, and now Lopez. Who is next?

Anonymous said...

Who will be the one little Indian, remaining? Is there a particular order to their departure?

Anonymous said...

You forgot Mr. Chester.

And Mr. Bergie.

Remember Lynn Spampinato and Paula (?)Butterfield both left under mysterious circumstances. Roosevelt brought both of them in.

That is an expensive revolving door.

http://parentsacrossamerica.org/2011/04/a-guide-to-the-broad-foundations-training-programs-and-policies/

"How the Broad Foundation affects public school families

Broad and his foundation believe that public schools should be run like a business. One of the tenets of his philosophy is to produce system change by “investing in a disruptive force.” Continual reorganizations, firings of staff, and
experimentation to create chaos or “churn” is believed to be productive and beneficial, as it weakens the ability of
communities to resist change."

Continual reorganizations, firing and experimentation are more likely to send families running from the district! It's hard to imagine that Broad ran his home-building company in that way.

Questioner,

Eli Broad is a self described VENTURE philanthropist. I think that term is an an oxymoron.

The end game is not "saving" private schools, it is about dismanteling them and creating charter schools for fake non-profit. Pittsburgh presented a unique problem to Broad. UPMC needed to stay non-profit hence the Pittsburgh Promise, that delayed the agenda. Broad realized the school board loved Roosevelt and bought
everything hook, line and sinker. Pittsburgh was worth waiting for and he will eventually profit. That is the end
game.

Quoting from the news article: "The Broad Foundation also
supports a broad range of pro-charter school advocacy
groups, as well as alternative training programs for non
educators who want to work as teachers and principals
(Teach for America, New Leaders for New Schools)
In addition, the foundation offers free diagnostic “audits” to
school districts, along with recommendations aligned with its policy preferences.  It produces a number of guides and
toolkits for school districts, including a “School Closure Guide,” based on the experiences of Broad-trained
administrators involved in closing schools in Boston, Charleston, Chicago, Dallas, Washington, D.C., Miami-Dade County, Oakland, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, and Seattle.

(Side note, I am not a fan of Lopez. I saw a post
regarding him & Broad he is not a Broad product.)
