Another new program

Drop all the "programs" and then PPS will see____ that they have what they need to succeed. "

Lots of little patches to try to fix up big structural problems.

When the stronger students were moved out to programs like CAPA, sci tech, magnets at Allderdice and Obama, the comprehensive schools had far fewer peer role models. A 4 day program will not replace them.

All of these problems were foreseeable and warned about ahead of time.

I would feel a lot more confident if such a program identified 4th and 5th graders and the goal was to grow student leaders to be a positive force in later grades. This isn't a new concept and was once suggested to a superintendent during a district parent meeting many years ago. The idea was to work with and sell student leaders to buy-in to an initiative, today one initiative might be We Promise, and other students would follow.

Did I miss it or didn't the article cover any on-going support of these special 60?

University Prep at Milliones has a new Principal. A former Hill educator and resident was appointed on Wednesday with a new Director appointed to that position, too. The former principal resigned and the former director was assigned to CAPA.

What is the new principal's name? New director's name?

Speaking of changes, I see Nina, Bill Heilman and Harold Grant are going on a year long leave? Anyone think this is unusual?

During a contract year no less....

Which is it ? University Prep - Pittsburgh Milliones - University Prep at Milliones?

With new leadership from the Hill , perhaps the name 'Hill Prep' might make a better fit and signal a turn around and renewed focus by the community and the 60 special 'efficacy role models' taking shape this month at Carlow?

12:57,

This is the first I have heard about Nina, Bill, and Harold taking a leave. Do you know any more details? What kind of leave and why? Thank you!

Where on earth did you get the information that they are taking a leave, EXCEPT for the "leave of absence" they take EVERY year so that they can do the PFT rep stuff instead of "teaching" in the schools??????????????

1:40 is correct. The leave for those elected union officials who work full-time doing union work appears every year in the board minutes personnel report.

With the election of a Secretary and Vice President, the PFT has demonstrated that full time officers are not needed to run the union. Once the "memorandum of understanding" was changed by the current PFT president, the Board should no longer allow this to happen. While serving the PFT, they are still participating in the retirement system too. Easy to do a 40 year career when you are not teaching. Put them back into the classroom. Let them enjoy the life back in a building with a poor administration, a poorer curriculum, and the poorest of teaching conditions to be found.
The district custodians, clerical-technical, laborers and craftsmen are all represented but do not maintain offices, let alone a whole building. Put em back where they belong.

It is good to see that someone new is paying attention. Welcome to our world.
