Problems at U PREP already?

The first week their are fights, kids screaming at adults and gun shots after school. The new administration are Mr. Horne the principal and Mr. Freeman the vice principal. The staff are already calling the principal Mr. Hardy jr because he does not talk to staff professionally and the kids say that he is soft. "

Can anyone confirm or deny?

IF any of this is true, the pft needs to grow a pair and address this NOW! Forget about the Labor day picture for the time being. PPS must be held accountable for this guy. Where did he come from? Was he a poor administrator? If he was, who gave him the glowing recommendation that got him placed at U-Prep. If this is accurate, there is a prep going on, but not a u-prep!
Down the toilet baby, down the toilet.

Addition to my 11:06 post,
If the gunshots were outside after school, Is it really fair to place blame on the new principal? Unless the "shots" were from a gun in the building, please don't add it to the criticism.

He is from Penn Hills and treats staff like crap! Mr. Jones disciplines the boys grades six thru twelfth and Ms. Hall disciplines the girls six grade to twelfth grade, So what do the administrators do? They are not at the doors in the morning and want everyone else to do their job! The staff is miserable. Mr. Horne hides in his office and people can not get in touch with him!

I have heard good from a staff member-expectations of respect for all staff-example was students saying thank you to lunch room staff, security coming promptly, 59 seconds between classes and that at least this staff member was spoken to in a professional tone and way.

The so-called Pittsburgh Promise and the Gates money was going to fix everything. Well they squandered the $40 million on RISE and the Vladimir Putin (Greenway) Political Re-education Institute. Now they will get another 3 million of someone else's money so that teachers can express their "frustration" to the thugs who disrupt their classrooms on a period by period basis. Oh well, what can you expect from a corrupt school board and the dysfunctional teacher's union that they are sleeping with! FOLLOW THE MONEY Maybe someone should go straight to jail. Oh and if you want to fix U-Prep, send Angel Washington and some of the other PELA Fellas there. They wouldn't last a week!

The school on Friday had a kid that said he was hearing voices and the voices were saying that their were going to be killings at different places. The Security told the principal and he said that he did not need any statements and had school police drive the young man home without 302ing the young man as the security told the principal the young man needed. The new principal wanted to hide the situation. The security and teachers seemed very concerned that he did not 302 the young man and he was not suspended from school at u prep!

How was the young person putting himself or others in harms way?

How does 8:56 know that the new principal wanted to "hide the situation"? Why make such a statemen?

What would "suspension" accomplish? And what would be the rationale?

Sending the student home seems questionable since it's unknown if parents/guardians were there to receive him. He could possibly have caused harm to himself or others in that state if mind while unsupervised. Not sure if there was enough evidence for principal to 302 but without a doubt a student should have been retained, parent should have been contacted to come to UPrep and pick him up with instructions to take him to West Psych for an evaluation before allowing him to return to school.

12:59,
As a parent who went through this type of thing, the principal, not the parents had to do this. I was instructed by my sons school (North Hills High School) to take him to Western Psych. I followed the ambulance to the hosp. After almost 10 hours, it was determined that there was no cause for concern. While being relieved, I was also frustrated to learn that the counselor who "listened to my sons cries for help" was the only one who could fill out the papers. Only the person who witnesses the behavior can legally fill out the documents. I sat there looking like a total jerk in the eyes of W.P. staff. They questioned why his counselor was not there.
All that said, If you are not a medical professional, and I am sure the new principal is not, how can you make such a decision that will affect another persons child. I think quite a few administrators would shy away for fear of being sued.
It is sad that the decision to make a 302 recommendation might be put aside for fear of retaliation. If you are a teacher, the PFT won't back you. Right or wrong, your on your own. An administrator only has the PAA. Will they provide support? I doubt it.
Temper your criticism. When something actually does happen, then call him out.

GREAT DAY AT UPREP! MANY FIGHTS AND THE PRINCIPAL DID NOT COME TO ONE FIGHT. I WANT TO THANK OUR SECURITY AND MR. JONES FOR KEEPING US SAFE! GREAT JOB! AS FOR THE PRINCIPAL, SHAME ON YOU!

My daughter came home today and said that their were two more fights today. I am getting her the hell out of there!

Where is the help coming from for these UPrep students? The first month of school isn't even over yet and the school is in chaos. Parents want to pull their kids out, teachers are frustrated, security guards are taking over the job of the principal, etc... The teachers need support, the students need a safe environment in which to learn, and the administration needs guidance. When is the Pittsburgh Public School Board going to get this situation under control??!!

it has been a long time since I had a kid in pps. speaking at a public hearing used to get a lot of attention. a peaceful crowd on the sidewalk outside the doors on a night when there is a board meeting might work. it seems like many who post here just want some help.

...and what happened to the 60 students from uprep chosen to participate in the 4 day summer camp at carlow last august to be 'trained' as peer role models sharing 'efficacy' secrets??!!

I really like the new administration. Mr Horne is always in the halls. They have created a very positive vibe in the building. They allow us to treat our students like young adults. The kids can't stand it that he is consistent with uniforms, cell phones and swearing. I have seen more suspensions this first month than I did all last year. Let's give them more than a month to be held accountable for changing the entire school culture.

Yes, the school leadership team are GOOD people. Listening to them gives you a sense of refreshing honesty, caring, determination, openness and commitment to/with each other and students.

Horne, Freeman and Jones will see and oversee change in a journey to success for UPrep students!

Let's support them in every way possible!

The school was out of control today! Kids fighting. Kids running the halls while the principal and vice principal hide. The staff and security are over their head and over whelmed. They need to bring in more security in this building or a police officer that does not hide in his office. The security officers found heroin off a kid in the school yesterday and he was sent out of the building. The security officer on three just sits on a stool all day! The school is out of control and you have a police officer that hides. The third floor guard sits on a stool all day and needs to retire. The admin hide. They had a fire drill before the buses came in the pouring rain!

Put it this way the teachers have already filed grievances toward the new principal! The director and principal are very weak and they depend on Mr. Jones and Security to get every situation under control not them! They can not clear a hallway because the kids do not respect them and will not move at all! The kids are running the school especially the middle school students! We as staff can not figure out why the principal sits all the middle school kids that are disruptive in front of the fourth floor office where visitors come in to wait to see the director but they sit there all day? Some times there are a dozen kids there swearing and fighting with one another and neither the director or principal are available to deal with them. The visitors come in and see that the kids are out of control in an open area waiting on an administrator. This is a red sign saying they are poor administrators making bad decisions! I was walking out to my car for lunch and their were so many kids waiting to see the director for discipline swearing and fighting with one another. These administrators need to realize that you do not sit kids in front of the office that are out of control and just let them sit there! What is wrong with them?

It is sad when we see the principal standing right next to Security and tells them to tell the kids to go to class instead of being a team player and just jumping in to help the security!
