This is a discussion of the effectiveness of "top down reforms" in Chicago (which is the district run by the Secretary of Education to be). The PURE mentioned in the article is a different group w/ a similar name (lots of parents seeking responsible education apparently!).

Here is another article, entitled Beware School "Reformers," by Alfie Kohn of The Nation, written a week before the choice of the new Secretary of Education. It is very thoughtful and pertinent to what is happening here in Pittsburgh.

I read the article in the nation last week so was, of course, a bit disappointed by Obama's pick of Arne Duncan. Our only hope is that with Obama at the helm, we will move away from high stakes testing. I testified last week at the BOE public hearing for the need to have parent engagement activities happening locally around each school, which seems to coincide with the "bottom up" method of school reform. We need more people coming to the public hearings to voice this opinion.
