From wpxi:
"School officials said they only notify parents and students of what their new bus routes are going to be. In this case there was no new route, so parents weren't notified."

1.5 miles for a little kid in the city is too long. If the district didn't inform the parents I can't imagine they know the safest route (crossing guards) to have their kids walk.
The story is very confusing. If the kids got bus service last year and not this yer what happened? Did someone move the school closer to their homes? 1.5 miles is the same every year, right? Oh, I bet there were special circumstances that do not exist anymore.
Still, it would have been nice for a transportation notice to have been generated and mailed detailing the change in status from rider to walker.
1 1/2 miles is too far for little kids to walk! This district is a mess!
State regulation, right?
This should be called a treacherous route or whatever the appropriate term would be.
