Three shot near Peabody/Obama

http://www.post-gazette.com/stories/local/neighborhoods-city/three-shot-near-old-peabody-high-657412/

The report says "in a field near" the school.  Was this on school property?  Is there a field near the school that is NOT part of the school outdoor athletic area?

The Tribune says it took place "at Peabody High School."

That's the most tangled up way of describing it happening at the school that I've ever heard. It's not a school event, but it clearly happened in that field.

But reading that you'd not be at all faulted for thinking that Peabody was empty and that there was some nearby, mysterious other school called Obama.

The incident took place at a youth football game:

That explains why it was even reported- often the papers cover shootings only if someone is killed.

I never apologize for media but I would think that the "old Peabody" notation is because most Pittsburghers are familiar with where it was, and not where Obama is.
That said, what a horrible neighborhood that has become. This incident made the news but there are many other rumblings about this and that which never make it.
Is there really any 'good' neighborhood anymore?

Those youth football leagues received permits to play on pps schools fields and used to have pps safety dept. with metal detectors at gates. I guess CO doesn't care if our kids are in danger of their lives on our fields.

They've actually changed the article.

Before it referred to the "old Peabody High School" at the beginning and also talked about how it had closed "2 years ago" at the end of the article. It made it sound like a currently empty building.

Now, it's better.

Both Mr. Brentley and Dr. Holley have spoken at Board meetings about the value these community football organizations can be to those involved, especially the kids. It seems turning to violence is the norm recently, for reasons that make no sense.

Brentley and Holley pushed this group on to PPS property. I hope the school board examines the failures regarding the understandings that came with this agreement. First, why was the private security not already there? The first game had already finished and still no security! What kind of schedule does the school police keep on week-ends? I understand that the police had trouble getting staff to review the videos. Also, have they paid the fee to use that property?

Weren't these groups using PPS property long before Brentley and Holley ever mentioned them? There is a long custom in most areas for communities to use school grounds for recreation. There do need to be rules and regulations, especially regarding safety, and neither Brentley nor Holley supported simply giving large groups an unregulated free run of the property. They just questioned the cost to the groups. For the most part these are public school students and groups are providing recreational opportunities that schools cannot provide. In fact the rational for saving money by terminating some middle school sports is that community groups were picking up the slack.

With the current twisted thinking by the CO team and administrators, had all the people in the stands had an effective teacher during their childhood, this would have never of happened. All would have been "intellectually engaged" in the game, thus preventing them from acting out, just like is expected in the classroom. Now of course, I am being sarcastic...It's so sad that these things happen but who is to blame? Why do we need security at youth games and whose responsibility is it to provide? Society is deteriorating despite teacher's best efforts to model appropriate behaviors and infuse character education into their everyday practice. Teacher's are giving less and less time to do these types of things because CO demands they teach the scripted curriculum to make sure all students meet the reading and math standards and get the TEST scores.

Sorry that should have said - Teacher's are GIVEN less and less time...

Replying to the 2:38 commentor; "that horrible neighborhood" is not horrible. Have you been there lately? The people that were in the fight came from Wilkinsburg.

If I recall correctly, PPS security/police do not work these weekend community games. Do the sponsors have to pay off-duty city police in addition to normal on-duty patrols? The school facility is likely not open to the players and spectators due to the cost to staff for access, correct?

Two board meetings ago, they hashed this out. The teams were to supply security and pay for one employee to open and allow access the the rest rooms. Have they paid the fee???? This needs looked into! Maybe they can play in Wilkinsburg!
