More of our tax dollars wasted. A $3 million federal grant for "restorative practices." Note that the money is for training AND research by the Rand Corp. Rand gets their hand in the pie again

The three most challenging high schools- Milliones/U Prep, Perry and Westinghouse- are not among the "treatment schools." So the practices are not being put to the test at the schools where there is the most need for solutions.

Agreed. I was wondering the same thing...also would like to know how the schools were paired up...like whose data will support the control schools.
Smells fishy to me.

I have an issue with the records for students in the control group schools reflecting poorly on them when compared to kids not getting suspended at the restorative schools. I also have a concern that the selection of schools will skew the results and the project will be deemed successful no matter what. But hey, what do I know?

Why does PPS always need a grant to do things? Can't the powers that be, with input from the teachers, develop and implement these types of "practices"?
And why does a company like Rand have to get involved "studying" results? Our teachers and administrators in the trenches can certainly determine what is or isn't working in the best interest of the students. Staff doesn't always have to be paid extra to be trained - do they? I'm sure we have dedicated staff who would undertake training without extra pay.
PPS has too many grants with strings attached.

If data is controlled the program can be marketed to other districts, pointing to the success of Pittsburgh. Districts not familiar with the schools that were and were not included.

Yes why not use that GRANT MONEY be use to train community grass root people to help work with at risk students in PPS there is no reason for RAND to do research we know the problems let's deal with solutions you think that they let RAND do this in Upper St Clair,
Oh better yet is CAPA included in research !!!!!!
