All of this spending on marketing started with Roosevelt. There may be some logic to it- if it costs a couple of hundred to entice a student to city schools rather than a charter, which will cost the district tens of thousands over the years, it could make sense... It would be interesting to see a study about the amount of educational funding that is diverted to advertising (both by charters and by traditional schools) once charters move into a market, and if the loss of these funds wipes out any benefits charters might bring. Don't recall any reporting about the money Roosevelt and Lane spent on marketing.

During the Roosevelt era it was all about branding-- I remember an exec from the board point to the golden arches and saying --see we will be like MacDonald's, which was when we made everything "Pittsburgh_____________" huge cost for stationery etc to pump the image-- new Log, etc-- was anyone impressed?

Something interesting in the article was the discussion of the Pps ad budget for various media outlets. It may help explain why newspapers and their related radio stations were so stubbornly resistant to any type of negative reporting about Roosevelt. Every time a young Trib reporter revealed unflattering information, they would be reassigned to some far away suburban beat to cover soccer games and spaghetti dinners.
