I heard it was given to some new guy in a shady way and he couldn‘t do it. I guess it turned into a choir? But then that got pushed back or cancelled. I guess you shouldn‘t try to fix something that ain‘t broken.
Obama has a new principal, who unlike the various previous principals (Walters, then before that Facaros and Bullard at Schenley) was not able to work with the teacher who normally does the musical. A musical is such an enormous undertaking, much more complex than a cabaret, talent show, choir performance or whatever they will be putting on instead. More complex but that much more rewarding.
Word is that the principal was also unwilling or unable to work with Mark Rauterkus, the school's very dedicated swim coach.
With frequent turnover of principals or other administrators, things need to be worked out again and again, increasing the chances that at some point they won't be worked out.
All this is helpful but it is still a crime that the musical was on the PG's list of high school musicals that came out in February but there was no musical. I never saw any announcement of it being canceled and I do follow PPS on facebook. It was a big shock that the lot was empty when we got there. Pretty shabby treatment of the greater commmunity or was notificaion intentionally ignored to avoid providing an explanation? Money is being spent on advertising but nobody thought to hang a poster on the door letting people know the rich tradition of award winning musicals at Schenley/Obama had died. My deepest sympathies to the alums of all the great musicals.
Remembering how good "Sister Act" was last year makes me want to see Dreamgirls that much more. Is there any chance it might be scheduled closer to the end of the school year? Losing that loving feeling for PPS musicals and will set my sights on "Working" at Canevin or "The Drowsey Chaparone" at Woodland Hills.
So who's fault is it that the musical did not happen? This being the first year ever that there won't be a Schenley/Obama musical...what can be done to ensure that it DOES happen next year.
It would have been the 47th annual musical this year.
Obama was lucky enough to inherit various good things from Schenley but those things cannot be taken for granted and will not automatically thrive outside the Schenley environment.

Heard that the CAPA Musical was GREAT.
More shows yet I think.
Are the 2 remaining performances of Les Miz sold out? ShowClix says both sat and sun are sold out.
The principal is famous for her disdain towards certain teachers of non-color, not to mention she is as incompetent as they come.
There won't be any musical at Obama. This is what happens when you have unprofessional and under-qualified people working as leaders.
