"This is from the PPS web site. It is a list of all high school and middle school positions available for the 2010-2011 school year.
There are 42 high school coaching positions open and 22 middle school positions. So much for continuity in PPS. Where have all these coaches gone?"

"The coaching posting date is May 26th, and the close date is June 2nd. With the holiday weekend and no school on Monday, that doesn't give people much notice/time to apply. Plus, factor in that there will most likely be teacher movements from one building to another next year. What is the rush all of a sudden? Something doesn't seem right"

What happens if a position doesn't get filled?
It stays open.
Why are there so many open positions, Thats the question that needs to be answered. This the most ever posted in the last 15 years or so.
I don't believe the new contract changes any of the criteria for coaching candidates. This means the same old status quo will continue - one person coaching multiple sports - students getting cheated because coach's time is spread thin going sport to sport. As long as a live body is at the helm, that's ok.
5 additional high school positions and 2 more middle school positions are posted.
So at what point does the district open the process to applicants who are not PPS teachers?
I don't think they ever formally "open" positions to outsiders. Usually "someone" in the system will eventually take it, usually for the money, or just to keep it in-house. I've seen PPS substitute teachers coaching, parents of players, former players, etc. coaching our teams. Are they all the most qualified coach in all these situations? I don't think so, but it is a live body and that is all PPS cares about. That is why our athletic program is in a sad state of disrepair.
