"Obama: More school, less play"

From today's PG:

The article notes that "Education Secretary has a vision of schools as the heart of the community."

- Investment in quality buildings in which people enjoy being for extended periods of time, located in places that are safe and easily accessible, would further this vision.

I was laughing as I read the article. Yet another American political leader comes out and dares to compare American education with education systems from around the world...and again gets it wrong.
More time in school may reap dividends, but the ultimate factor is simple: when parents value academics first and foremost, their children will do the same. When school is prioritized as being the road to success, the child will understand.
Obama and Duncan are two more in a long line of officials unwilling to place blame where it is due: at the feet of absentee parents who simply don't stress the need for academics and the value of school to their kids.
Shame as it is to say, the adult American ego generally needs a swift kick in the pants.
