"More parents are choosing charter schools for their kids"

Article in the Tribune, not very well researched statistically and containing somewhat random quotes but at least raising a topic that should receive attention. The header indicates the article is part of an occasional series examining the Pittsburgh Public Schools (the PG wouldn't touch that topic!).

Example of meaningless quote:

Lane, hired as superintendent in December, said she knows some parents are frustrated.

"There's no point in worrying about it, because that isn't going to solve anything," she said. "We have a long road ahead, but we're working very hard."

This statistic from the article IS interesting:

CAPA the gem of the district where PPS brings Michelle Obama has 17 kids on its waitlist- and Propel Northside has 3000 KIDS ON ITS WAITLIST? Can this be correct?

I believe the article meant that Propel in total (combination of all 8 Propel sites) has 3,000 students on the waiting list. Yes, that can be correct.

I have read elsewhere that 3,000 is Propel's waiting list across all of it's schools, not just the new one on the north side.

I don't understand.

How can Propel compete with PPS? Jeremy doesn't have an on-call contract with a videographer, an Archivist on staff, or a central office gas grill?

Hmmmm.....

The Trib, a republican-leaning newspaper owned by Scaife.
Pennsylvania, a state that has a governor who is openly anti-public schools and pro-charter schools.

There wouldn't be any political connection in this, right?

Nawwwww.

Funny point:

"We are in a more competitive environment than we have ever been in before," Superintendent Linda Lane acknowledged. "We have to have schools that parents want to send their kids to."

.....

Well, our PPS schools are hardly competitive when it comes to school competitions, as in competitive sports.

Sports reform was to enhance the competitive environment, but Dr Lane put sports reform back on the back burner. Ironic. Tragic.
