Gun found outside Perry

From WPXI: http://www.wpxi.com/news/news/local/gun-found-outside-perry-high-school/nMdkH/ A PPS representative is quoted as saying there had been "gun activity" reported in the area the previous evening. A question is whether, after gun activity is reported near a school, school police should check whether any guns have been left behind.

Correction to above.. The sword was 5 feet long. Why was this weapon being removed out the back door by a school police after hours? Should this have been reported to the city police? Read thru the administrators handbook thats on line. It encourages principals to keep things hush hush, or risk seeing it on the evening news. God forbid they should have to acknowledge what is really going on inside their buildings.

Anon 5:42, I know of a PPS vice principal who called the city police because a student was brandishing a knife in his building.

He called the city police because the student was armed, and he knew the school police are not armed.

The vice principal was told by Central Administration that he would NEVER be promoted because of what he did.

He was supposed to call the school police, not the city police. Why? Because Central Administration can control school police reports. They cannot control city police reports.

The vice principal's sin was that he put student safety before public relations.

Central Administration is rotten, rotten to the core. They will without hesitation put public relations before the very lives of students.

is PPS pleaing the Second Amendment
the RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS on school property!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! meaning you have to get and stay on top of guns on school property

The kids and their family's are the ones who lets the media know what's going on in these schools. Those students tell there parents when something is going on or they text them from school. So belfield can not do anything about that .

Moe, I believe this to be 100% true. The PPS administrators in a certain north side high school believe that they must keep things under wraps or they will not have jobs when the school closes. I know more than half of the staff at this school. They talk about it all the time. The name of the game is PR. Keep your school out of the news and you will be rewarded. I can only hope that they do not transfer these two clowns to my school.

It is so bad in some of these schools . Why are the trying to keep it a secret at belfield .Image over safety that's so wrong.

I understand that one of the roles a principal needs to play is to ensure a positive image of their school. However, when staff members report that they have suspicion that a certain
student(s) maybe in posession of a weapon or drugs and that lead is not followed up on well it's only a matter of time when it hits the fan. That's what we are seeing all too often. Oh how most of us actually miss our seasoned retired principal. You never know what you had until it's gone.

- Didn't the Westinghouse principal call the police all the time earlier this year for things like disruptive behavior, resulting in dozens of students receiving citations? Administration didn't seem to have a problem with this approach as a means to get control over behavior in the school.

Well, I'm guessing they only agreed to that when it became clear that they had no other way to gain control of that school than to allow her to do what she wanted.

Of course, remember they've already said they're looking for someone new. She was just doing their dirty work for them, can't expect them to keep her around once she's brought order back.

Questioner 10:55,

I am not familiar with the details of the Westinghouse principal's police calls.

But be aware that the school police can issue citations just like the city police can.

So when the district says something like "the police were called and citations were issued", the district could be referring to school police and not city police.

Don't get me wrong. I applaud the use of citations to get unruly situations under control, regardless of who writes them.

But that doesn't change the fact that when city police are really needed - like in weapons or riot cases - they are not called. Too much bad publicity.

I understand a Principals desire to maintain a positive image for a school. However, NOT at the expense of the safety of their students and staff. At OHS, it's all about keeping things quiet. The Administration is more concerned about themselves and where they will be next year. It has been rumored that they are both looking outside of the district. We can only that this is true. The VP spends all day walking the halls yelling out "Block 1, get to class. Block 2 get to class, Block 3 get to class.....and so on" the principal spends his day talking sports with security and then hides in his office
all day. One can only hope that Lane and Company read this blog. PLease Dr. Lane, address this situation. DO not continue to allow this to go on by allowing these two to continue ruining another school next year!!!! Come to the school. Speak to the teachers.

Lane, Asst. Super's and French need to make unannounced visit to all PPS schools not just OHS. I suggest they start with those schools who are headed by PELA's. All is not as rosy as they think with their so called exceptional leaders. Big talkers and game players while the students run the school. Our principal is interested in trying to be the students friend. Big mistake! Someone has got to be in charge, to bad it's not our principal!

Can June come any quicker? Maybe we'll get a veteran principal next year who knows how to manage the whole school and not just RISE. It's become increasingly apparent that PELA's need more experience as a VP before they are ever charged with the task of serving as a school's leader.

**It's become increasingly apparent that PELA's need more experience as a VP before they are ever charged with the task of serving as a school's leader.**

I'd "demote" (most but not all of) them even further. Another couple of years in the classroom, first. Not as a coach, or anything like that, but a real live classroom teacher. That will help them to understand what a teacher needs from a principal.

If they survive their RISEs during those years, then they can VP for another couple of years for more experience. Any that are still left at that time might then be suitably authoritative and competent administrators.

The "talking to and pleading with" kids to be better in school PELAs are doing so much more harm than they realize. Harm to the children involved, harm to the kids in the classrooms they return to, harm to the teachers who know there is no real back-up at all, and harm to the district as a whole as parents do what they can to GET OUT.
