What is going on here?

On another post Curious George wrote:

There are many unhappy teachers in the district. In fact, I don't know of a single teacher who is satisfied with the current situation.

So can anyone please, please explain why the union reform slate lost? It can't be that most teachers are beyond caring, can it?

After all, more than 800 teachers voted for Nina's slate. And Nina was, along with John Tarka, the one who allowed this mess to happen.

Exactly what is going on here?

Teachers have finally discovered this site. They are becoming more and more willing to speak out. Teacher safe talking about this site every day. Just this morning , everyone was talking about the posting about the bully principal. Our 's is a poster boy for that article. We're just trying to figure out which of the 15+ bullied teachers are ones posting about him. So many have retired or were pushed out in the past three years, if could just about anyone. Almost every day I get a call or email from a colleague from another asking me if I have read the latest posting. Pure reform has given teacher sand staff a safe place to express the truth. THANK YOU!!!!

Get in line pal.

I am scratching my head as to why Ron Paul is still working to get delegates for the GOP Convention. Dr Paul should have clinched it by now.

We've seen this before...Flordia 2004.

The poster is on the right track...keep asking questions and answers will follow.

How long will it take Nina and her gang to cave-in about the seniority issue? That is the question. I'll bet money that the PFT and Bellefield will come up with some PR BS spiel to justify/change the contract. Bet on it. When the votes were being counted, Lane was sweating it. She didn't want Nina to lose.

I have only followed this in the paper and a bit on this blog. Morale is not good and although kids do not seem to be saying that any stresses are trickling down to kids it is probably a big effort to keep it that way. Just a suggestion: Now that the slate led by Ms. Visgitis has been elected it is a good time for the union's two staff people who also previously held elected positions to retire or return to the classroom and have the two individuals who were elected prior to the most recent election assume the staff positions. This would be a very conciliatory gesture and signify to the union membership that there are common goals.

Any teacher in their right mind who works in PPS should look elsewhere for a teaching job in a stable environment. It is crazy what is going on in our school system and it is only going to get worst. There is no stability or security for anybody. Bellefield has the union in their pocket so teachers have no voice. The union sold out to Roosevelt and there is no going backwards. Just wait until the next contract negotiations. There will be no seniority, post-retirement health care will diminish, etc.

Almost half of tose eligible to vote did not even bother to do so.
What is wrong with these people!
They disgust me!

Are they apathetic? Or by not voting, are they making an anti-union statement?

Thank you to the person who started this post! The principal and VP have stopped making their off the cuff snide remarks, at least for now. I'm guessing they read this and either realized it was about them or closely identified with the posts. Hopefully this can serve as a wake up call. Dear Mr. Bully Principal and your Boy Wonder VP sidekick, do you realize or even ca that your actions a undermining your authority and effectiveness. You need a good devoted staff. You can not run a school all by yourselves. Have the courage to stand up to Bellefield and say, I have a school filled with great teachers and I will not focus and fire just to fill a quota!!!!!!

Can't agree with you more May 18th 10:35 am retired teacher. If you don't vote, you have no right to complain or even air your concerns on this blog. Glad I was able to retire before all of this crazy.

I'll bet Fondy and Schrager are turning in their graves. The PFT's role in representing teachers and para's is not worth the amount of dues collected from your paycheck. If this assault on public educators continue, we will see only those at the top of the pecking order with fat cat paychecks and the teachers and para's who are doing the work will be asked to take cuts and give back benefits.

Sounds like the Republican policies for big business is now a part of education reform. You will all be competing endlessly for a piece of the pie also known as demonstrating your worth from the time you enter the work force until the day you retire (unlikely) more like till you die. Why? If seniority rights are compromised, it will be a easy task to RISE older, higher paid staff right out of their job.

Better acquire additional certifications so you can move out of the classroom or skills to move out of education. Otherwise, you'll be reduced to working as a Walmart greeter for minimum wage. Welcome to the age of education reform by those who spent no time or limited time in the classroom.

Retired and happy!

If all the teachers that have recently been fired or pushed to resign had been voting- would the outcome have been the same?

Anonymous said...

It would be really beneficial for teachers on this site to write coherently and use a spell check. I'm often embarrassed (as a PPS teacher) by the poorly written garble that is often posted here by teachers. Think before you type!

Anonymous said...

Only 30 or so resigned through the buy out. Only a handful more were actually fired.

Questioner said...

But how many were pushed to resign, without a buyout, to avoid being fired?

Principal mistreatment of teachers is apparently epidemic.

This may also require a separate post. I think it's time for People to learn what is going on in our schools. It's one of Pittsburgh's dirty little secrets.

Chanel 11 just reported a story about a kindergarten student that walked from MLK to the children's museum, yet I cannot find a news story on it?

Is anyone willing to start. A new blog for teachers where they can open share their bullying experiences? It's time to address this in a more organized fashion.

So what do you do when your principal tells you they don't want you there? You can't just pick up and go somewhere else. I would love to go to a new school where the principal would give me a chance. It is amazing how principals can put you in an abusive type situation where they put you down so much just like you are being physically abused.
