Pittsburgh Promise award level not tied to PSSA scores

An automated call went out from PPS today stating that contrary to a letter sent last week about the PSSA's, PSSA scores are not tied to the Pittsburgh Promise.

Last year an announcement was made that only those students scoring advanced on PSSA's or 600 plus on each SAT section would be eligible for the full 10k/year scholarship award.

The issue here is the misunderstanding. I was clear about the requirements a long time ago. Yes, there were additional requirements for eligibility announced, they were rescinded within a very short time. Who generated the message about PSSA scores and Promise being tied again? Sheeeesh. Thank heavens for robo-calls to fix mistakes.

There was a big article in the paper about the additional requirements- presented as "an opportunity for students to double their Promise award" or something like that- but when were the requirements rescinded? The only thing posted was a comment earlier this school year about rumors they would be rescinded. Then last week in a letter to parents PPS generated the message about PSSA scores and the Promise being tied.

I think parents of seniors were told that they were rescinded pretty soon after that announcement about the levels needed for the higher amounts. With in the month?

Wasn't that recission just for that particular senior class, since they had very little notice of the new requirement? Unlike the announcement of the requirements, it doesn't seem to have been a public announcement.

What happens to the Promise...and PPS...when the money dwindles?

Tomorrow, Pittsburgh City Council will proclaim March 7th as Pittsburgh Perry/Oliver Unity Day. Principals from both schools will join students to accept the proclamation from Darlene Harris, Council President and District One Councilperson.
